Overview

American Pie presented itself as a local mom-and-pop pizzeria. The project involved creating a mobile ordering app capable of managing both pickup and delivery, with a primary focus on a comprehensive build-your-own pizza experience.

Design

The splash screen immediately set the tone, featuring a reinterpretation of Grant Wood's American Gothic, in which the couple was transformed into pizzeria owners holding a dripping slice rather than a pitchfork. This bold, creative decision conveyed the brand's personality even before any orders were placed.

The prototype consisted of 66 screens in Adobe XD, encompassing every possible user scenario from initial launch to checkout. The ordering process is split early into pickup and delivery options, each with its own address verification, service radius map, and scheduling features. Both routes merged into a single build-your-own pizza sequence that guided users step-by-step through choices like crust type, thickness, preparation method, sauce, cheese, toppings, and sides. It was detailed enough to support fully customizable products without overwhelming users.

Out-of-area zip codes, verification issues, guest checkout versus account creation, and post-order rating prompts with discount incentives were all thoroughly handled to eliminate potential edge cases.

Outcome

A 66-screen interactive prototype covering the full ordering experience across both fulfillment methods, ready for user testing and developer handoff.
